But how do you know which window company/contractor to use? We suggest that when you begin looking at your options, you should evaluate each option as you would any other big decision. It’s okay to ask a lot of questions and get a clear idea of what you’re getting.

Question #1: Does the company carry insurance?
Every company should carry liability insurance and worker’s compensation insurance to protect you in the event of an accident or issue. Ask for proof – ask for the contractor’s certificates of insurance and any other current certificates that show that they are covered. If they are hesitant or unwilling to provide this information, consider that a red flag.

Question #2: What do past customers say about your work?
Asking this question is very important and many times you can find online reviews that will detail other customer’s experiences, both positive and negative. Don’t be afraid to ask the company directly for references or pictures of completed work. Look for information about the timeliness of work, responsiveness to questions, and trustworthiness. Take the time to do your research in this area – you’ll be glad you did!

Question #3: Does the company provide a workmanship warranty?
Oftentimes, a company or contractor will provide this type of warranty for one year or more. Companies should warrant the work they do and most oftentimes, if there will be a problem with the work quality, it will show up sooner rather than later. Reliable contractors will be committed to standing behind the work that was done and will want to make sure it’s done correctly in order to preserve a positive reputation.

Question #4: How does the company deal with customer complaints?
Find out how the company or contractor handles complaints from customers. Ask if
there have ever been any court cases regarding the company or if there has been any issue with revoking the business’ or contractor’s license and ask how the problem was resolved.

Question #5: How responsive is the company to your questions?
If the company or contractor is not responsive to your inquiries or is not happy to provide information that you request, it’s likely that they don’t need or want your business that much. If one company or contractor isn’t interested in the potential job, move along to the next place and determine if that place fits your needs.
